Two motto scrolls and the relationship between lettering, armorial paint, and catalogue interpretation. The museum identifies the kneeling figure as Simon de Varie and reports partial overpainting of the border arms. The date of the manuscript does not date every visible paint layer.
Your first reading
Begin with the lower scroll. Record what letter forms and separators you see before supplying word spaces. Compare the upper scroll, and mark any joined letters explicitly. Leave the full blazon and the identity of later paint unresolved unless another source supports them.

Facsimile at the archive
Read beside the original source.
The archive identifies folio 87 on PDF page 23. Image reuse has not been verified, so open that page in another tab beside this desk. If the file does not open, record the access limit rather than guessing at the hand.
Compare the modern Portuguese identification with the manuscript lettering in the archive’s facsimile. The caption supplies an archival locator and an identification; it does not stand in for a transcription of the original hand.
Your first reading
Open PDF page 23 at the archive. Locate the manuscript inscription and choose a short span to transcribe. State which words you inspected in the facsimile and which you know only from the caption. If the image is inaccessible, record that limit and work on the caption as a modern witness.

A second opening in the same manuscript, not an independent manuscript copy. Getty describes repeated motto wording on the scrolls and dog’s collar and reports seventeenth-century repainting of the shield. This desk does not reconstruct the earlier arms or independently date the paint layers.
Your first reading
Compare the lower scroll with the lower scroll on folio 2. Give each inscription its own locus. Then compare the upper scroll and collar: different placements of a phrase require separate readings, not one automatically copied transcription.

The desk preserves your text. It does not check the handwriting or certify a translation. “Checked” is your review status; identify the reviewer and basis in your notes.

Give each doubtful form a location, a proposed reading, and a reason. A question mark alone cannot explain your decision.
